First Visit FAQs
How long will the visit take?
Preparing your child for their first dental appointment at Little Lights Dentistry can set the stage for a lifetime of positive oral health experiences. Here are some practical and comforting strategies to help make that first visit smooth and stress-free:
1. Help your child get excited about his visit. Although he may be too young to speak or understand languages, he can still pick up on tone and body language. If you appear happy and excited about visiting the dentist, he will be as well.
2. For younger children, read books or watch videos: Many child-friendly resources explain dental visits in a fun and reassuring way. Some good books your child may enjoy are:
The Crocodile and the Dentist by Taro Gomi Just Going to the Dentist by Mercer Mayer The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan & Jan Berenstain Daniel Goes to the Dentist by Alexandra Cassel Schwartz Elmo Goes to the Dentist
3. Role-play at home: Pretend to be the dentist and count your child’s teeth with a toothbrush. Let them play the role too!
4. Speak with our office ahead of time, and we will explain what will happen during the first visit. Every dentist has a slightly different approach, and you’ll feel more prepared and relaxed once you understand what to expect.
How do I prepare my child?
An initial visit with the Dentist generally takes approximately 30 minutes and includes an exam, x-rays, and the development of a treatment plan.
Your child’s first dental appointment at Little Lights Dentistry will usually include the following: 1. The Dentist will examine your child’s teeth, gums, jaw, oral tissues, and bite to ensure everything is properly forming and coming into place. 2. She will then carefully polish their teeth, removing any plaque along the gums. 3. The dentist will take X-rays if any deep cavities are present and visible to the naked eye. 4. Finally, she will advise you on home brushing tips and techniques, including brushing twice per day with a fluoride toothpaste, when, and how to begin flossing. 5. Follow-up visits are scheduled in 60-minute blocks, depending on the procedure(s) and the child's level of cooperation.
